I'm reading 1984 for school now, and I remmeber that a couple MEI people were into it last year or so. I am finding it to be not what I expected. I'm 3/4th of the way through, and I thought that the middle got pretty boring, being all about the relationship between Smith and Julia. It
s a bit disappointing, although the social commentary is certainly valid, if a little reptitive. I find that the dystopia of Brave New World, which we read earlier to contrast the two, would work a lot better than that of 1984. Opinions?

Oooh, I was just thinking about 1984 today... we had a test on economies, and the only way I remember that the working class is proletarian is by remembering the proles... Rolling Eyes

I like 1984... it was... intriguing. Very geared for the times it was written in, however.

As far as George Orwell goes, I find I was rather more astounded in a literary sense by Animal Farm. THAT was an incredible book. They're similar, in a sense, but Animal Farm is more shocking. *shrugs*

I haven't looked into Brave New World or Animal Farm, actually, and especially the latter I've been meaning to... I never had anything Orwellian in any of my English classes, which struck me as somewhat tragic. But I read 1984 on my own time anyways. And yeah, I've got to agree with Dûn, very much written for the times. Which stands to sense, really.

Also, I'd be inclined to agree there is a certain monotony when it comes to the Winston & Julia thing... Winston, Julia, Winston, Julia, Winston Julia Winston Julia WINSTON JULIA WINSTONJULIAWINSTONJULIA... Admittedly, the reason I do find these parts interesting is because of their inherent fear running alongside their deliberate small rebellion. But yeah, the parts I really found the most riveting were the beginning and the end. Snrk.

Ariane, Elachi, Ariane, Elachi, OH ZOMG ARGH MORE CAN'T THEY JUST BLOODY SHUT UP.

Monotony? ^.^

/stuff Jandalf is probably the only one who'll get.

Personally? I read 1984 to get all the jokes about it. It wasn't a book I'd buy, but it was facinating for its annoyingness. I absolutely HATED the ending, and that, I think, is why I liked it. Because I hated it so much but I absolutely couldn't let it go.

That said, I enjoyed the stuff running between Julia and Winston. The characters felt very there to me, and that's very often what determines my ability to read through a book.

Eeeexactly. I don't think I need to say anything more than that.
